There are at least 1,500 in Colorado alone, with their numbers ranging up to 3,000. These are not house cats. I've had to kill one before. They are out to eat anything they think may taste good, including human adults or children. I am not trying to be rude at all. Please understand that. I don't know where you live, but please, and I beg PLEASE look at it this way. Grizzly bears were once common where there are now large cities. I don't think people in those large cities would want them re-introduced to the city.

Newbies like me are needing your input, and I, as well as all other dogsters, are glad that you post. Without frequent posts, dogster would not be what it is today.

No need to be rude, it was just a question if you noticed him pooping EXCESSIVELY. If not, forget it. Well forget it anyway BOL....

| Barked: Tue Nov 3, '09 6:54pm PST | | | | | | But seriously, back to topic, here is what one Iditarod site said sledders feed their dogs:
Some of the things that mushers feed their dogs include:
A very high quality dry dog food
Ground Beef (either in the form of large chunks or hamburger patties)
Beef Fat
Lamb and Lamb Fat
Chicken and Chicken Fat
Chicken Skins
Turkey Skins
Wild Game (such as beaver, moose, caribou, seal, elk, and deer)
Horse Meat and Fat
Fish (can be fed frozen raw, cooked, or even dried)
Vegetable or Animal Oils or Lards
Special Meat Mixes containing meats and other nutritional supplements formulated just for sled dogs
Vitamin and Mineral Supplements
Pro-Biotic supplements to help promote good bacteria in the dogs' stomachs

At the very least, you can supplement with some of the suggestions and mix & match. I heard you can purchase seal oil for mucho calories, too.
"What is the best diet for sled dogs during the race? A big one.
The average 55-lb dog needs 1500 calories a day to be healthy. Under the stress of the Iditarod, the same dog needs as much as 12,000 calories per day, with from 60-70% (emphasis mines) of those calories coming from fat. That's the equivalent in calories of 24 McDonald's Big Macs, or more than 11 pints of Haagen Daz vanilla ice cream. "
You can always adapt the diet to meet you dogs' needs, but I don't think you can get more calorie dense foods than those fed to freighting dogs. Edited by author Tue Nov 3, '09 6:59pm PST
