Ol Roy is one of the only dog foods our local Humane Society refuses to feed. If people drop it off, they throw it away if it is anonymous and kindly ask the people who bring it in to please exchange it for something else. They feed Purina Dog/Puppy Chow (not much better in my opinion), but they have seen what happens when they feed the shelter dog Ol Roy, and it ends up costing them a lot more money than it would if they just bought something else.

yeah, actually I read in consumer reports that if you are going to get cheap kibble that the best way to go is actually ol' Roy (and congrats to walmart for that )

but cheaper than even ol' roy would be chicken, eggs, rice, carrots. Rice is cheap. chicken right now is about 70-90 cents a pound, and even the cheapest dog food is right now $1.50 a pound. Eggs are like a dollar a dozen for a once a day or once a week treat. Carrots are a great eat because they can be chewed, and they are good for you as well So maybe consider giving your dog these foods instead

I'm sorry, but no--feeding strictly eggs, chicken, and carrots is not a balanced diet for any canine. Homeprepared diets are just not something you can read about one day and start the next and still be feeding a balanced diet. You need variety and you need bones and organ, not just meat and vegetables. There's more to it than that, but that's the basics. Point is, you've got to know what you are doing.

I started feeding a DIY prey model raw diet to my dogs because after reading many testimonies from other raw feeders and reading up on the diet itself for quite some time, I decided that it was the best choice for my dogs. I continue feeding it because I found that it works. Honestly, the best decision I ever made when it comes to my dogs.
Much thought and research should go into feeding any homemade diet as your dog's health is nothing to toy with. A poorly balanced homemade diet can quite possibly be worse than Purina.

Purina, while still a very cruddy food, is definitely better than Ol'roy. At least the purina specifies which type of animal the by-products come from (poultry), Ol Roy just says "meat and bone meal".

Purina Dog Chow Ingredients:
Whole grain corn, poultry by-product meal, animal fat preserved with mixed-tocopherols (form of Vitamin E), corn gluten meal, meat and bone meal, brewers rice, soybean meal, barley, whole grain wheat, animal digest, calcium carbonate, salt, calcium phosphate, potassium chloride, L-Lysine monohydrochloride, choline chloride, zinc sulfate, Vitamin E supplement, zinc proteinate, ferrous sulfate, added color (Red 40, Yellow 5, Blue 2, Yellow 6), DL-Methionine, manganese sulfate, manganese proteinate, niacin, Vitamin A supplement, copper sulfate, calcium pantothenate, copper proteinate, garlic oil, pyridoxine hydrochloride, Vitamin B-12 supplement, thiamine mononitrate, Vitamin D-3 supplement, riboflavin supplement, calcium iodate, menadione sodium bisulfite complex (source of Vitamin K activity), folic acid, biotin, sodium selenite.

Guaranteed Analysis %:
Crude Protein (minimum) 21
Moisture (maximum) 12
Crude Fat (minimum) 10
Crude Fiber (maximum) 4.5

Ol Roy Premium

Ground Yellow Corn, Meat and Bone Meal, Ground Whole Wheat, Soybean Meal, Wheat Middlings, Animal Fat (preserved with BHA), chicken-by-product mill, animal digest, rice, salt....various vitamins and minerals...menadione bisulfate...various vitamins and minerals.

Both suck, but if I only had the choice of these two, I would definately choose the dog chow.

When looking for a decent food. Pay attention to the first 3 ingredients. Meat should definitely be there. There are a lot of foods out there. We have tried many. Do the best you can and then do not get upset if you can't buy the real expensive stuff. My old vet told me to once a week add an egg and a little vegetable oil to their food because its good for their coat. He also told me as long as it (the chow)says its nutritionally complete it didn't matter. It's also ok to add or mix in cooked veggies and cottage cheese to supplement their chow. God bless.
