"Hot spot"

Well, not really a hotspot. More like a bloody, red wound right on one of Cookie's fatty tumors. I know that Cookie has been chewing that particular area a lot in the past few days. We're going to call the vet in the morning. For tonight, I sprayed it with hydrogen peroxide. I suppose I should apply some triple antibiotic before I go to bed, as well.
We'll also need to buy Cookie an Ezlibethian collar tomorrow.
Here's two things that I think may have caused/contributed to this:
-I hadn't added Cookie's garlic powder to her food in the past several days. She's been on the garlic powder since August, as I recall, and does really well with it as long as I'm vigilent about adding it to her food.
-Could the tumor now be cancerous?

Any advice to tide us over? If you have no advice to offer, prayers and good thoughts will do.

I usually do not recommend hydrogen peroxide because it can be caustic to the skin and actually prevent it from healing. Cleaning with antibacterial soap and warm water is better. Apply triple antibiotic ointent is good too.
Why do you have her on garlic powder? I don't neccessarily think stopping it could have caused this?
As far as a change in the tumor...any change like a sore should be reported to your vet. Many times dogs will go after these lipomas and chew them because they feel different. It may be just becaust or it may be that it is cancerous and itches or hurts.
A vet check would be the best thing
Good Luck!

The garlic powder is for flea control, since I didn't like using pesticides in the form of commercial products. It seems to do it's job as long as I keep it consistent. By forgetting it for a while, Cookie begins itching. She's had that fatty tumor for a while, and it just happens to be near the area she usually bites. My dad thinks it may be some sort of cyst someone was telling him about that feels like a fatty tumor, but I don't know.

We called the vet and they said to keep an eye on it for another day, because it does seem to have improved since last night.

You know, a couple of months back, Cookie had a similar situation. One of her fatty tumors developed a sore, and when you squeezed it, bloody puss and other fluids that I could not identify came out. It healed after a couple of weeks, and we never actually had to take her to the vet although we did call them.

Have you ever had the bumps aspirated to check for cancerous cells?

We aspirate all of Lantis' multiple bumps at his bi-annual check ups and this year we came back with one that tested positive for sarcoma.. he is at the University of Pennsylvania's oncology department today getting xrays and everything else done before we can decide whether to do radiation therapy or excision.

I hope you don't have cancer, but one can never be too sure. hug

I'm so sorry things are going well. I would use the triple antibiotic but use it sparingly, especially if theres a chance she could lick at the wound. My vet says it's really harsh on Kidneys if they lick the wound and injest it. He didn't say not to use, just to apply very lightly. A little goes a long was as far as keeping the wound from getting infected.
