Mr. Kite- "Sumo"

| Barked: Wed Nov 4, '09 6:27pm PST | | | | | | a 5lb yorkie died at our dog park last week because
the owner let him in to play with the big dogs
because there were no little dogs
and he got stepped on and killed.

i agree, she made a stupid mistake...but a 5lb dog with big dogs- no matter how much the dog "likes" to play with big dogs?
and i don't think that the barkyard should have to make more rules to not allow dogs under a certain weight into the big dog's section. it is a public park, and people should be responsible for their own dogs.

The ground is my- newspaper. |
| Barked: Wed Nov 4, '09 6:41pm PST | | | | | | I've never had a little dog. I'm used to bigger dogs, but whenever I do pet a small dog, I always feel like I'm going to break them.
When my dogs just quickly run past me and barely catch the edge of my leg, they almost make me fall over or spin me around. A few times they got too excited and ran into me and that really hurt. There was a lot of force with just that accident. My dogs only weigh 45 and 60 lbs, so they're not huge, but if they can hurt my leg by just brushing by, I can understand how they could easily hurt a small dog.
I would never let my dogs play with a super small dog. I'm afraid I'll break the little thing just by petting it, so I'm definately afraid that my dogs will hurt the thing.

Never leave a- treat behind! |
| Barked: Wed Nov 4, '09 6:42pm PST | | | | | | It really makes me nervous when I see people bring little chi's in our park with big dogs--not safe. It's pretty obvious it's not safe, I don't understand why people would risk their dog's life like that. You wouldn't throw a five year old kid into the middle of an adult's rugby match . . . | | | | |

The Boys- (Manny &- Salty)
Best Buds for- Life! |
| Barked: Wed Nov 4, '09 6:54pm PST | | | | | | At our park there's a pap that hangs out in the big dog side. She's very spitfire and she has a big dog sister so she knows how to handle herself. Also, we're all regulars and all of our dogs know each other. BUT she's often found on the table with all the pawrents and anytime a new dog comes in she's TOLD to get on the table.
I feel bad for the yorkie's mom, but she shouldnt have let her dog in with the big dogs if it didnt know how to handle it.

Yes, Even My- Eyes Are- Spotted... |
| Barked: Wed Nov 4, '09 7:14pm PST | | | | | | We don't have a divided section at our dog park but our small dogs there know to hang around the tables or keep to the opposite side of the big dogs. Some do like to chase them when they are chasing other big dogs. We haven't had an accident yet. But sometimes I worry about them small dogs. The owners always say they can handle themselves though... so, I guess if they are willing to take the risk? We've been lucky so far I guess. | | | | |

Bianca
What big ears- you have...
|
| Barked: Wed Nov 4, '09 8:47pm PST | | | | | | Another thing I worry about is prey drive with the tiny dogs around. There are often very small dogs here at the dog beach. One recent time when I took Bianca there, she saw a tiny white dog (Chihuahua mix I think) at a distance and she focused on it with the same look she gives to squirrels, which made me nervous... Only when she actually sniffed the dog did she seem to realize it was a dog and not a critter. Normally she is very good around small dogs, living with cats she knows how to be careful around them (she is very aware of where she is stepping/walking even when playing with a toy) but from a distance some toy breeds do look quite a bit like prey. | | | | |

"that's my- favorite thing" |
| Barked: Wed Nov 4, '09 10:07pm PST | | | | | | So sad.
I agree with not changing the rules. What if there are only a handful of dogs in the big dog section and all are just over the weight limit? Or if there is a big pack of wolfhounds and someone's dog is just over the limit....... better to use common sense. Even if some people don't have any, legislation doesn't make up for that anyway.

Princesse- Lily
But you can call- me Princess(e)! |
| Barked: Thu Nov 5, '09 3:08am PST | | | | | | That is so sad I already made the decsion that Princess will not be playing with bigger strange dogs. I will let her greet friendly ones, but no way is she going to be playing with them. Our potential dog park is supposed to have a big dog side and a small dog side. She will be staying on the small dog side. If it didnt I would only bring her when there were small dogs there and leave when the big ones came. I wont even be bringing her and Bunny there together . As a matter of fact , with Bunny's high prey drive , I dont know if having him there with very small dogs is a good idea. I trust him with Princess in the house, but my gut tells me outside in a big open space is not a good idea. I suspect I will be making alot of judgement calls if this dog park beomes reality | | | | |

Mr. Kite- "Sumo"
being for the- benefit of mr.- kite.
|
| Barked: Thu Nov 5, '09 3:46am PST | | | | | | not to mention the people on the big dog side.
they could also step on a 5lb dog...
they're not looking at the ground when they're
walking- their dogs are big, they don't have to.
then a tiny little thing comes trotting along...
i feel so bad for him. especially if he did like to play
with big dogs.
the small dog side is usually much more vacant than
the big dog side- i just can't get over setting a 5lb
dog in with a great dane!
