What They’re Like to Live With

:
Biewer Yorkies are not your typical lapdog. Courageous and stout-hearted, the Biewer Yorkie has a feistiness that’s lovable and slightly contagious. Easily trained and highly intelligent, this breed is also known for its independence. Biewer Yorkies are people-oriented dogs, craving activity, involvement and attention.

Like other small breeds, Biewer Yorkies are not aware of their size. They assert themselves around the house with an endearing self-confidence, and they get along well with other dogs. Intensely protective, the Biewer Yorkie make a perfect pint-sized watchdog.

Things You Should Know

:
The Biewer Yorkie can live as long as long as 15 years. Because of its size, it can develop some health problems including hip and joint issues, poor digestion and tooth decay. Dry, solid food will help keep its teeth strong and healthy. Be careful when holding or carrying the Biewer Yorkie, as it can be fragile.

Biewer Yorkies should be groomed regularly, including daily combing and brushing. The hair on their heads can grow long, so it’s sometimes necessary to tie it in a band or hold it in a clip to make seeing and eating easier.

Biewer Yorkie History

:
The Biewer Yorkie originated in 1984 when a puppy with unique, white markings appeared in a litter of Yorkshire Terriers owned by German breeders Gertrude and Werner Biewer. The Biewers adored this puppy and immediately began selective breeding to produce more.

The Look of the Biewer Yorkie

:
Biewer Yorkies have balanced, toy-sized frames covered in long, straight hair that usually comes in striped patterns of black & white, brown & white and blue & white. They carry themselves in an erect and confident manner. A typical Biewer Yorkie has a flat head (with lots of hair), a medium-sized muzzle, expressive eyes, and a pair of erect, V-shaped ears. If left natural, the Biewer Yorkie’s tail is carried low or slightly above horizontal.
